King Tides at Alviso, 1/22/23 by Ronald Horii
The King Tides are the highest tides of the year. They occur in the winter. There were King Tides on the weekend of 1/20-22/23. I went to an event by the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition on 1/22/23. They rode bikes from the Sunnyvale Baylands to Alviso Marina County Park. There were presentations about the restoration efforts along the Bay to protect the shoreline from rising sea levels. Here are pictures from that event: https://tinyurl.com/44k3p89b. Below are pictures I took of the effects of the King Tides on the Alviso Marina, Alviso Slough, and the Guadalupe River. 1/20/19 was the last time I saw the King Tide in Alviso: https://tinyurl.com/y9xlvgxk.
Here is more information about the Guadalupe River: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadalupe_River_(California). More information about Alviso: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alviso,_San_Jose.
The huge protected area around the Alviso Marina is part of the 30,000-acre Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Alviso Marina County Park provides the access point, staging area, and visitor facilities to the Alviso portion of the refuge: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/don_edwards_san_francisco_bay/.
