Calero County Park After the Storms 1/18/23 by Ronald Horii
After several weeks of above-average rain, I wondered what all this rain has done to the trails and creeks in Calero County Park. On 1/18/23, I went to 2 entrances of the park. First, I went to the main trail entrance, where there's a park office and visitor center. It's off of McKean Road south of Bailey Avenue. I walked on the Oak Cove Trail up to the Los Cerritos Pond and a little beyond. The trails were deeply eroded, water was crossing the trails, and some trails were closed. Later, I went to the Canada del Oro entrance at the end of Casa Loma Road. The parking lot there is for the Open Space Authority's Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve, but it provides access to the Longwall Canyon and Little Llagas Creek Trails in Calero. The Longwall Canyon Trail is a flat service road, but it crosses Baldy Ryan Creek. There's no bridge at the crossing. It's easily crossable in the summer, when the creek is dry. During the rainy season, it's not easy to cross without getting your feet wet. There is a bridge over the creek, but it's on the Little Llagas Creek Trail. I went to both creek crossings. Later, I went into Rancho Canada del Oro to see Llagas Creek.
