Guadalupe River, Blossom Hill Road to Almaden Lake, 1/9/23 by Ronald Horii
On 1/9/23, after weeks of rain, I went to the Guadalupe River to see how it was doing. Earlier last year, it was completely dry past Almaden Lake. Guadalupe Creek was not flowing. Even Alamitos Creek above Almaden Lake was dry. Later in the year, after more rain, the creeks started flowing again. The past few weeks, they have been rising dramatically. After this recent round of storms, Almaden Reservoir, which feeds Alamitos Creek, has been spilling. Alamitos Creek is high. Water is flowing rapidly through Almaden Lake. The Guadalupe River has been rising quickly. It is near flood levels. It is especially high downtown. The river begins after Almaden Lake. This shows how high it is now. I took these pictures with 2 cameras. I first used my Panasonic ZS100 travelzoom. Then as the sun began to set, I switched to my Samsung A42 smartphone, which does well with high dynamic range sunset shots. I did a similar walk along the Guadalupe River Trail and around Almaden Lake on 11/9/22: https://tinyurl.com/ycyuc5er. In the summer of 2021, there was a similar drought as this year: https://tinyurl.com/5dwc4heb. Compare how the river looked then with what it looks like now.
