Golden Oak Park, San Jose, 12/16/22 by Ronald Horii
There's a new park in San Jose. I've been watching it being built over many months. It's finally open. It's close to Costco on Great Oaks Parkway. It's also near where I used to work at IBM, now Western Digital. It's a nice new park for the Urban Oak neighborhood, built on what used to be an orchard. There's just one thing missing: There are no golden oaks in the park. As far as I can remember, there were never any golden oaks here, but it's a nice name. What are golden oaks? They are non-native oaks from Cyprus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_alnifolia.
However, native canyon live oaks, which grow in the Santa Cruz Mountains, are also called golden cup oaks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_chrysolepis. This is from Councilmember Sergio Jimenez: "Golden Oak Park ribbon cutting & grand opening on January 28th:
Golden Oak Park has gotten new decomposed granite, which finally completes the long awaited park for the community. Save the date for a ribbon cutting celebration on the morning of Saturday, January 28th."
