Upper Lake at Bear Creek Redwoods Preserve, 11/14/22 by Ronald Horii
On 11/14/22, I went to Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. I've been there before. I went to see it on 6/14/19, right after it opened to the public. Today, I wanted to see the newly-opened Alma Cultural Landscape. Here are pictures of it: https://tinyurl.com/2s3j99uv. While I was there, I walked around the Upper Lake, which has accessible trails around it and interpretive signs. Here are pictures of it. The lake was originally a sag pond, created by earthquake faulting. It was enlarged in the 1800s to turn it into a lumber mill pond. After the property was sold in 1887, the lake was turned into a trout farm pond. In later years, it became part of the landscaping for the mansions and Alma College. The trees were in their fall colors. Compare these pictures to the ones I took previously in June of 2019: https://tinyurl.com/yynjqtx7. Later in the day, I hiked up the trails through the redwood forests: https://tinyurl.com/bp46ets7
