Wood Road Trail Dedication, Almaden Quicksilver, 4/17/04 by Ronald Horii
I'm writing this in 2022. I made a recent album on the Wood Road Trail in Almaden Quicksilver County Park (https://tinyurl.com/juyp4zcv) and wondered when the trail opened, and if I made an album or webpage on it. It turned out the dedication for the trail was on 4/17/04. While I made a slideshow on it to show at meetings, I never made a webpage or album on it. I went back to those pictures I took and made this album. The opening of the Wood Road Trail was a big deal. It provided a trail connection to the huge Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve to the west. In doing so, it extended the Bay Area Ridge Trail from Sierra Azul into the Almaden Valley, where it could connect to the Los Alamitos Creek Trail and Santa Teresa County Park. Starting at 1400 feet, the Wood Road Trailhead is about 1000 feet higher than any other entrance to the park, making it much easier to reach the heart of the park, which peaks at 1728 feet on the top of Mine Hill. There were lots of people from different agencies and groups attending the ceremony. While I know many of the people, I don't remember everybody. I primarily identified officials. Feel free to add your own comments. After the dedication, there was a hike on the trail. Here are pictures of the hike, in 2 parts. Part 1 (group hike to English Camp): https://tinyurl.com/8uszznnx. Part 2 (my solo return hike): https://tinyurl.com/42s44rpd. Almaden Quicksilver became a park and many interpretive signs were created thanks to the efforts of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association (NAQCPA), headed by Kitty Monahan: http://www.newalmaden.org/. Here's more information and maps of the park: https://parks.sccgov.org/santa-clara-county-parks/almaden-quicksilver-county-park. There have been tours of the historic areas of the park for many years. Here are some pictures I took in 2001 (pre-digital): http://www.newalmaden.org/AQSPark/VanTour/Vantour.html
