Alviso Slough Bay Trail Bike Ride, w/Closures, 7/16/22 by Ronald Horii
The South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project, Phase 1 is underway. It's a joint project of Valley Water, the State Coastal Conservancy, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The purpose is protect Alviso, North San Jose, and the Regional Wastewater Facility from storm damage and rising seas. The project involves construction work on the levees around the Alviso Ponds. The impact to trail users is that the trails on the Mallard Slough Ponds and the east side of the Alviso Slough ponds will be closed until January of 2024 (see the maps). That means it's not possible to do a complete loop around the Alviso ponds. It is possible to do a long out-and-back trip around the ponds, with a loop at the end. It looks like an "e." It's much longer than doing the normal loop. It would be a very long walk, but manageable as a bike ride. So that's what I did. This shows the route I took.
