Fire Aftermath by the Los Gatos Creek Trail, Campbell, 3/22/22 by Ronald Horii
On 3/18/22, I started seeing news reports on multiple TV channels and news websites about a huge building fire in Campbell. They said it was near the intersection of Knowles Drive and Dell Avenue. That rang a bell. It's near the Los Gatos Creek Trail. The entrance to Los Gatos Creek Park is on Dell. They showed pictures of the building that was on fire. It looked familiar. I've seen it countless times from the trail. I looked on Google and Street View and figured out where that building was. I first saw it on KTVU:

Here's another of the news reports. They interviewed someone I know:

Here's another report: https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/south-bay/3-alarm-structure-fire-in-campbell/2841315/
This was from the Mercury News: https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/03/18/campbell-firefighters-battle-blaze-sparked-at-three-story-commercial-building/
I didn't want to go anywhere near that fire, but I wanted to see it. I hiked up into the hills of Santa Teresa County near where I live and could see the smoke in the distance. I could even see smoke the next morning from Almaden Quicksilver County Park. On 3/22, I needed to be in Los Gatos, so I biked the Los Gatos Creek Trail, which had reopened yesterday, and peeked at the fire site through the fence from the trail. This is what I saw. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied and was scheduled to be demolished anyway a week later. No official cause has been announced, but there are signs asking for information about arson. There are fire investigators on the site, but with the huge amount debris, it may be difficult to determine the cause. I wonder if there were squatters staying in the building who caused the blaze? It's strange that an empty building just catches fire.

It’s always curious that buildings that are scheduled for demolition catch on fire… it’s as if the owners figure out a way for insurance to pay for a chunk of the demo bill for them…
I remember when they were tearing down a bunch of the old IBM Cottle buildings, over a year period there was at least 2 or 3 fires that I can remember in buildings scheduled for demolition… it always seemed convenient to me…
