Coyote Creek: Where Did the Water Go? 3/8/20 by Ronald Horii
On 3/8/22, I went for a short bike ride on the Coyote Creek Trail from Metcalf Park to just past Metcalf Road. I was scouting for a hike I was going to help lead the next day, so I was only going to go as far as the hike would likely cover. I was curious to see how much water was in Coyote Creek and the Coyote Percolation Pond, also called Coyote Creek Lake. In December of 2021, we had lots of rain. There was so much rain, it caused flooding in multiple places along the Coyote Creek Trail. See what it looked like on 12/30/21: https://tinyurl.com/mr22vsct.
After a dry January, the water was way down. This is what it looked like on 1/24/22: https://tinyurl.com/467ht5n4
The creek and pond were much lower, but at least the creek was still flowing. Now, after a dry February. the creek has stopped flowing past the pond. It's flowing into the pond and soaking into the ground. It is a percolation pond, after all. Nothing is flowing out of it. There's another pond downstream that is getting lower. These pictures show what the water situation looks like now.
