The Easy Trail at Coyote Ridge, 3/5/22 by Ronald Horii
Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve, owned by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, is open to the public for a few weeks every year for viewing its spectacular wildflower displays. It's also famous as the best place in the world to see the Bay checkerspot butterfly, which is federally-listed as a threatened species. You can also see many species of birds and animals, including eagles and tule elk. However, getting to the best viewing spots requires hiking up long, rough, steep trails. They are not recommended for families with young kids or those with physical limitations. There is a short, easy, almost flat trail near the entrance on Malech Road that they cut at the start of each season. They called it the "Beginner Loop." It may not have the breathtaking expanses of wildflowers as the upper parts of the preserve, but it's not just a circle through a field of weeds. Here's what it looks like. It has some surprises. It's a nice alternative for people who can't make it up the steep trails to the ridgeline.
