Chicken Coop Cleanup at the Bernal Ranch, Santa Teresa, 3/4/22 by Ronald Horii
On 3/4/22, there was a cleanup of the chicken coop at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch in Santa Teresa County Park. It was done by park staff members Rob, Jason, and Katrina, with help from 2 volunteers. My group, the Friends of Santa Teresa Park, was doing another cleanup at the ranch at the same time: https://tinyurl.com/2z9zrws3
I was cleaning up the area by the west barn. From time-to-time, I stopped by to see how they were doing on the chicken coop. Here are some pictures. Afterwards, one of the volunteers, came to help us weed the garden area. The chicken coop was originally built in 2002 as an Eagle Scout Project, organized by Scout Neil Steiner, and designed by Park Interpreter John Dorrance. http://www.stpfriends.org/BGJDed/BGJDed.htm
A more recent Boy Scout project added some shading to the fenced in area. The chickens were originally cared for by 4H, but their contract with the County expired. There were 2 chickens left in the coop, cared for by the park interpreters until one of them died recently. The other was removed to join another flock, so the coop was empty. Now the department is looking for someone to bring chickens into the coop and take care of them.
