Almaden Quicksilver History Hike, 2/26/22 by Ronald Horii
On 2/26/22, there was a history hike on the Wood Road Trail in Almaden Quicksilver County Park. It began at the Wood Road entrance on Hicks Roads. This hike has been given for many years, led by different people. This was the last one I went on (10/26/19): https://tinyurl.com/y3ohkl6q
Today's hike was led by Park Interpreter Luke Bailey and Park Docent Mike Cox. Mike is a geologist who was hired to survey the mines and make the park safe for visitors before it was opened to the public. He was a founding member of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association (NAQCPA), which is a volunteer group that supports the park. (See http://www.newalmaden.org/)
The hike started at the Wood Road Staging Area, and followed the Wood Road Trail to the Mine Hill Rotary Furnace. The group got to see the furnace close up. Then there was an optional hike to English Camp. From there, the visitors could return on their own or explore more of the park. This was an early hike on this trail in 2009: http://www.newalmaden.org/WoodRd0309/WoodRdHike.html
