New Almaden Trail Wildflowers, 2/19/22 by Ronald Horii
On 2/19/22, I went for a short hike on part of the New Almaden Trail in Almaden Quicksilver County Park. I started at the trailhead at the Mockingbird Hill Staging Area. I followed the trail to its junction with the Buena Vista Trail, then returned. It's early in the wildflower season, but there were many blooming. The New Almaden Trail doesn't have huge masses of wildflowers like some of the trails in nearby Rancho San Vicente or Santa Teresa Parks, but it makes up for it in variety. It seems like there's a new species to see around every corner. The trail isn't steep, like the adjacent Hacienda Trail. It follows along the sides of the hills, going in and out of valleys, with many seasonal creek crossings. It's a narrow footpath for hiking only. Here are pictures of the trail and some of the plants I saw along it.
