Little Uvas Creek Preserve, 2/12/22 by Ronald Horii
On 2/12/22, I was at a training session for Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (OSA) docents at one of their closed preserves, Little Uvas Creek Open Space Preserve. It covers 285 acres on Uvas Road, upstream from Uvas Reservoir. I've been there many times. The first time was on 10/28/14, when I was one of the first docents to visit the property, right after OSA bought it: http://www.stpfriends.org/Melchor/MelchorRanch.html. The last time I was there was when I helped to lead a senior hike on 6/7/19: https://tinyurl.com/y3wu9hc2. While it's not open to the public, it's almost a ready-made park. It has a large flat field by the entrance that serves as a parking lot. There is a network of hard-packed ranch roads winding through the gently rolling hills of the preserve. There are at least 5 spring-fed ponds that always have water in them and attract birds. There are hillsides with serpentine soil that get covered with spring wildflowers. There are dense forests on the hills on the west side of the preserve, which are almost inaccessible. The east side has more wide open gray pine and oak woodlands and is where most of the activities take place. Here are some views of the preserve. There may be some public events held there later this year. Private groups can request access. There will be a CNPS wildflower hike there in April that I'm helping to lead.
