Influential Educational and Hobby Toys From My Youth by Ronald Horii
What led me to my career and hobbies? I was an electrical engineer for almost 4 decades, making and using computer-controlled electronic equipment in disk drive development and manufacturing. After I retired, and even before, I became an amateur outdoor and nature photographer. I lead hikes, where I talk about plants, animals, and the environment. How did I get here? I can trace it back to my youth. When I think back to those years, I'm reminded of the toys I used to play with. I don't know if my interests led to me getting certain toys, or the toys triggered certain interests. Maybe it was a combination of factors. Here is a collection of images, mostly pulled from the Internet, of toys and hobby items that I remember from my early childhood to teen years and helped to shape my future endeavors. These are from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. I'm grateful to my parents and relatives for getting me these toys when I was younger. In later years, I would save up my birthday and Christmas money and buy them myself.
