Martial Cottle Park Hedgerow Workday, 11/14/21 by Ronald Horii
On 11/14/21, there was a work day at Martial Cottle Park on the hedgerow project. It's a joint project between the Friends of Martial Cottle Park (FOMCP) and the County Parks. The hedgerow is a linear garden, 921 feet long by 20 feet wide, planted with native plants. It's along Chynoweth Avenue, next to one of the farm fields and past the Master Gardeners' parcel. FOMCP raised funds for the project starting in 2019. The plants were grown at the Watershed Nursery. Planting started in 2020, with the help of volunteers and County Parks staff. They covered the ground with sheet mulch to kill weeds, installed a drip irrigation system, covered the ground with wood chips for mulch, and planted trees, shrubs, and perennials. Today they are planting at the west end of the project, where they ran out of time and plants in previous work days. They will be digging holes, putting in wire gopher baskets, and planting native perennials and grasses. There will be another session on Sunday 11/21 from 9 to noon. They will be planting about 500 plants total. They include narrow leaf willow, ocean spray, black sage, blue witch, CA rose, monkeyflower, coyote mint, hedge nettle, gumplant, strawberries, sedge, and blue wildrye. In the future, there will be an interpretive sign on the hedgerow. Here's the website for the Friends of Martial Cottle Park:
