The trail was built 30 years ago, cut through serpentine rock with jackhammers. It has suffered from erosion and wear for all those years, without major rock work. This trailwork should partially restore the trail to its original condition when it was first built, probably better. There's more erosion control and more durable base rock at the bottom. The trailwork isn't done. The County Parks Trail Crew will return to tamp down the base rock. After it rains, it will settle in more. The trail is unique. It was built before there was a good understanding of how sensitive serpentine environments are, which support rare and endangered species. There is no way this trail would be allowed to be built today, with all the environmental restrictions. It does allow you to see some of these rare species. It's a relic trail that should have a longer life now.
