Viva Calle SJ, 9/19/21 by Ronald Horii
Viva Calle SJ is an almost annual 1-day event when several miles of city roads in San Jose are closed to vehicles from 10 am to 3 pm. (It was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.) It allows people to safely walk, run, bike, skate, or ride scooters down those streets and explore the city. It's not a race. People can start anywhere along the route and explore all of it or part of it. At several places along the way are activity hubs, with live entertainment, food trucks, information booths, merchandise vendors, giveaways, and games.

I biked the whole route. I started on the Guadalupe River Trail by Coleman Ave. and intersected the event on St. John St. I went east on St. John St. to 3rd St. I went south on 3rd St., then turned left on Santa Clara St. I followed that east all the way to where it turns into Alum Rock Ave. I continued east to the activity hub at Mexican Heritage Plaza. I turned around after that and backtracked on Santa Clara St. I turned and went north on N. 3rd St. to Japantown on Jackson St. I hung around there awhile and had lunch. I came back on 3rd and took St. John St. west to the activity hub at the SAP Pavilion. I then went east all the way to the end of the route on the Alameda. It was getting late. There was one portion I missed on 1st St. I took a shortcut down the Guadalupe River Trail and got to the activity hub at Parque de Pobladores just as the exhibitors were packing up. I then came back on 1st St. to St. John St. and the Guadalupe River Trail. Instead of a travelogue, like I made in 2019, these are highlights of the whole event.
