Exploring the New Hecker Pass Trail in Gilroy, Part 1, 7/31/21 by Ronald Horii
On 7/31/21, I was driving home along Hwy 152 after visiting Mt. Madonna. I passed Gilroy Gardens, then noticed there was a new trail next to the highway on the right. I was curious about it, so I went to check it out. I haven't been this way in several years, so there was a lot new to me. There's a new neighborhood south of 152 and west of Santa Teresa Blvd. The access is off of Santa Teresa Blvd. on 3rd St. I parked at a public park, hopped on my bike, and explored the trail. This shows what I saw. It's a travelogue, more than a trail guide. The trail is not quite complete, but in the future, it should be possible to do this as a loop. I took a more complicated route. The new trail links to the old Uvas Creek Trail and is an extension of the trail. I also took the older Uvas Creek Trail to its end at the Gilroy Sports Park, but that's another story. I found out later that this is actually called the Hecker Pass Trail.
