There was a lot of smoke in the air today because of distant fires. It was above ground level, so the air quality in the valley was not too bad. It obscuring views of the mountains, so it was not a good day to be hiking up the higher peaks in the area. Down at Martial Cottle Park, I got some great of the setting sun, filtered through varying layers of smoke.

If you are in a colloidal suspension (i.e., smoke) below the threshold density to see directly, your line of sight continues until the linear filtration of light lowers the light reaching your optics meets that criterion.
Here, further away from the hills than you are, it can seem you are sitting in a pretty clear area, surrounded by fog or dust etc, when in fact you are already in it. If you look up, it usually looks pale or dark too, depending on the light.

Checking the air quality now: Bay Area looks OK or marginal. The Central Valley looks marginal to bad. The Sierras look bad.
