Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve, CNC BioBlitz, 5/3/21 by Ronald Horii
On 5/3/21, I went on a solo hike in Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve. One of the reasons was to do a volunteer trail patrol. The other was to record living things found in the preserve as part of the City Nature Challenge BioBlitz. What's that? This explains it: https://baynature.org/2021/05/11/after-more-than-one-million-nature-observations-worldwide-the-most-common-sighting-was/?fbclid=IwAR0xZek_GHGJ_ZibwjYZ1A-pCR7BEW_ro9LxH6-sEDYTjx4OrJBwDgMh-QU#.YJw6Jm4-2WU.facebook

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) was a 4-day event from 4/30-5/3/21. It was a worldwide challenge to get people all over the world to go outside and observe nature. On the last day of the CNC BioBlitz, I hiked the 4-mile Heart's Delight and Arrowhead Loop Trails in Coyote Valley OSP. A BioBlitz is a collective citizen science event, done as a group or solo activity. Participants record observations of living things in nature and enter them into the iNaturalist database. The observations can be uploaded in the field using the iNaturalist smartphone app or later using the iNaturalist.org website. I took pictures of mostly plants and a few animals that I saw along the way. (I prefer to document plants, since they don't move very fast.) I also had a GPS receiver to record the locations, since my phone wasn't working. When I got home, I uploaded the pictures into the iNaturalist website, along with the GPS coordinates of each observation. In the album below are the same pictures that I uploaded to the database. They were taken for species identification and not for beauty. They aren't the greatest shots, but they show the plants and animals that I saw. I didn't record everything, or I would still be there. As it was, I spent 4 hours in the preserve.
Here are my pictures of other BioBlitzes, which were group events:
