Dumbarton Quarry Transformation, Coyote Hills Regional Park by Ronald Horii
For over 50 years, the Dumbarton Quarry operated at the south end of the Coyote Hills in Fremont. It produced crushed rock for building roads. The quarry site covered 100 acres, including a 32-acre quarry pit that reached 310 feet below sea level. Quarry operations stopped in 2007. The land became part of the East Bay Regional Parks District. It is being filled in and turned into a campground. It will be called the Dumbarton Quarry Regional Recreation Area. It adjoins Coyote Hills Regional Park and is across Hwy 84 from the headquarters of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The Apay Way Trail in Coyote Hills runs past the quarry and leads to a bridge over the Dumbarton Bridge toll facility and connects to Don Edwards. I've biked that route several times over the years, the latest on 1/17/21. Here are some pictures I've taken, showing the transformation of the quarry into a campground.
