Bay Day 26-Mile Bike Ride on the Bay Trail, 2/13/20 by Ronald Horii
Bay Day is an annual event held in October that celebrates San Francisco Bay with scheduled events. This year, because of COVID-19, it's been changed. Instead of big events with crowds of people, there's the Bay Day Challenge, which is for individuals and families. https://www.bayday.org/
For the whole month of October, you can choose from 5 activities or travel a total of 25 miles on the Bay Trail. I chose to bike 25 miles. I went to Alviso on Saturday 10/10/20 and rode the 9-mile Alviso Slough Loop, and the 4.3-mile Mallard Slough Trail, so I was more than halfway there, with 13.3 miles. On Tuesday 10/13/20, I decided to go as far as I could, either doing 11.7 miles to get to 25 miles total, or going 25 miles in one shot. I did the latter. I actually went over 26 miles. I rode my bike from Alviso, through the Sunnyvale Baylands, along the Moffett Trail, through Shoreline at Mountain View Park, all the way around the Palo Alto Baylands, and back. I could have gone even farther through Ravenswood, but I didn't want to over-do it. Luckily, I didn't have much of a headwind. The Bay winds can be fierce at times, which can make it a struggle going upwind, and a free ride going downwind. If you're going to do the Bay Day Challenge, this a good route, with possibilities of alternatives. If you like birding, this is heaven. Here are pictures from the route, with the mileage listed at key points. I used an odometer app on my phone to record the mileage.
