February-April 2014, merkitsijänä Universal Rights Group
We have had a very busy few months since our official global launch in January.

On 19th March, we launched our first policy report on the UN Special Procedures (co-authored by Ted Piccone, Brookings Institution) at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. The report was launched at an event co-hosted by URG, Norway and Switzerland; 'Understanding and strengthening the output of the Human Rights Council,’ which was attended by over 100 representatives of diplomatic missions, NGOs, OHCHR and academia. We co-hosted 2 other side-events at the 25th session of the Human Rights Council; "Africa and the Right to Development: Towards the Post-2015 Agenda” and "Human Rights Implications of Displacement in the Context of Disasters,” as well as a Press Breakfast aimed at increasing press awareness of the key issues and methods of work of the Human Rights Council.

On 12th-13th March, we hosted a regional consultation for Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) at UNEP in Geneva, which brought together 18 EHRDs from Africa and Europe, plus a number of organizations and experts, including the United Nations Independent Expert on human rights and the environment, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights defenders, the UN Special Rapporteur on toxic waste, OHCHR, Greenpeace, Human Rights Watch, WWF international, Article 19, Amnesty International, the International Service for Human Rights, Global Witness, UNEP, International Land Coalition, Earthjustice, Justlaw and Waterlex. The event provided a platform for EHRDs to discuss their experiences, share their expertise, enhance collaboration and identify the projects, mechanisms and good practices which can support their work. OHCHR and UPR Info also took the opportunity to provide training on effective engagement with the Human Rights Council.

Our official UK launch was held at the New Zealand High Commission in London on the 1st April, and was attended by over 50 state officials, diplomats, NGO representatives and academics. The event also marked the UK launch of The Routledge Handbook of International Human Rights Law, edited by Professor Sir Nigel Rodley and Scott Sheeran. Our directors have also participated in a range of conferences in different locations, including the international conference on methodology of reporting to UN human rights mechanisms : experiences and best practices in Rabat, the Africa CEO Forum in Geneva, the 4th Istanbul Process meeting in Doha (at which Marc Limon chaired the opening panel) and the 4th Francophonie UPR seminar in Moldova.
