I was please to be able to see and photograph this cloud formation today. I only saw a hole punch cloud one other time. The cause of these formations is not certain but it is surmised that they can be formed by interations of the atmposphere with propeller driven airplanes. I did see what looked like a C-130 plane pass by in the general area prior to the formation, so there may be some creedence to this explanation. As rare as these cloud formations are, I was amazed to see a sundog and halos in the cirrus clouds within the formation. It made for a beautiful spectacal.

Brooke O'Klatner yeah I bet for sure it was plane either a prop or exhaust from a jet taking off from CLT. The condensation nucleoli introduced by the exhaust can cause rapid precipitation in the super cooled water of the cloud. Wonder if you got any sprinkles on the ground?

To Stephanie: It looked like an angel spreading its wings to me too. Brad: I also think it was caused by the passing of a C-130 military plane. The flight path looked like it was flying generally from the ESE to the WNW. It may have come out of Greenville, SC.

There were no sprinkles on the ground. If you look at some of the other photos on my page, the precipitation from the hole punch cloud appeared to be verga. When the formation passed overhead, the only precipitaion I noted was from condensation of our own stack exhaust.
