Coyote Creek BioBlitz at Anderson Lake County Park, 3/17/19 by Ronald Horii
On 3/17/19, a BioBlitz was held along Coyote Creek at Anderson Lake County Park, led by biologist Merav Vonshak and a host of knowledgeable volunteers. Here's the description:

A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place.

Join the Coyote Valley BioBlitz where you and experts come together to explore around Coyote Creek, and document observations of all living things in a short period of time.

Docents will guide you and teach you to use the iNaturalist app on your smartphone or tablet to record all the living things you encounter. Flowers, trees, butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles, birds, and squirrels. We love them all - now let's go find them!

And, if you don't want to bend over to see that spider, you can pick up a litter stick and bucket and collect the litter near the creek and in the park to keep it clean. Every little piece counts!

This event is Co-hosted by Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful, Santa Clara County Parks, & Santa Clara Valley Audobon Society.

Here's a note from Merav after the event:

Hi everyone,
I wanted to thank you all for another amazing BioBlitz! The weather was perfect this time, and with 80 participants, we were able to document 246 species in 963 observations! Our participants said they liked the “banana ants” - I guess they mean the velvety tree ants, that smell very sweet, and actually pretty great, at least for an ant. They also liked the slime molds - I’m really glad we were able to show them eight different species. We had six families with kids, that seemed to enjoy the aquatic insects we found in the creek. Our wonderful birders worked extra hard, and helped us document 46 species of birds, including a White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) and two Golden Eagles.
If you haven’t uploaded your observations yet, you can still do so. Please make sure that all your observations have been included in the project. If not, let me know and I’ll try to help you fix it. You can view our project and join it here - https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/coyote-creek-winter-bioblitz
I hope you had fun, and I’ll see you on the next one!
