Little Uvas Creek Hike for El Toro Social Club, 10/11/18 by Ronald Horii
On 10/10/18, I led at hike at Little Uvas Creek Preserve, with the help of fellow Open Space Authority docent Joan Murphy. This was for the City of Morgan Hill's El Toro Social Club, which is run out of the city's Senior Center. It organizes events for active 50+ adults.
Little Uvas Creek Preserve (originally called the Melchor Ranch), is owned by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority. It purchased the 285-acre property on Uvas Road in 2014. Santa Clara County pitched in half of the $1.4 million purchase in exchange for a future trail easement between Uvas Canyon County Park and Uvas Reservoir. The former ranch has existing ranch roads, leading to 5 spring-fed ponds. It is grazed by 3 resident horses. The ranch roads are wide, hard-surfaced, and not very steep, so they make for easy trails. We explored the preserve, talking the terrain, geology, vegetation, and animal life. It has serpentine rocks, which support rare native plant species and colorful spring wildflowers.

Since I was leading the hike, I couldn't take many pictures. Here are more of my pictures of Little Uvas Creek Preserve: http://www.rhorii.com/#melchor
