Viva Calle SJ at Martial Cottle Park, 9/23/18 by Ronald Horii
9/23/18 was Viva CalleSJ day. It's a huge annual event that closes several miles of city streets so thousands of people can bike or walk them without having to deal with vehicle traffic. Along the way are lots of activities and resource booths. This year, the route followed Monterey Road and South 1st Street from Branham Lane to E. William Street downtown. It also included Branham Lane from Monterey Road to Martial Cottle Park on Snell Avenue.

In the morning, I helped my group, the Friends of Santa Teresa Park, setup a booth at the corner of Branham Lane and Monterey in City Council District 2. It was called the "D2 Elbow." It was organized by City Councilmember Sergio Jimenez's office. There were lots of activities. Here are pictures of the D2 Elbow and the Friends of Santa Teresa Park's booth:

I rode my bike from there down Branham Lane to Martial Cottle Park, which had a major activity hub. These are pictures of it. I had to hurry so that I would have enough time to see the whole route and event. These pictures just show a sample of the activities and exhibitors there. After leaving Martial Cottle, I rode back to the D2 Elbow and up Monterey Road and South 1st Street all the way to the end of the route at E. William Street. I hurried back and returned to the D2 Elbow just before the route was reopened to traffic.

I missed last year's Viva Calle SJ, but I rode it in 2016 from Willow Glen to Japantown:

Today's Viva Calle SJ event at Martial Cottle was organized by the City of San Jose, in partnership with the Santa Clara County Parks. On Saturday, October 6, 2018, Martial Cottle Park will be hosting a huge event, called the Harvest Festival: https://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/Documents/harvest-festival-flyer-18.pdf
