Coyote Meadows Cleanup on Coastal Cleanup Day, 9/15/18 by Ronald Horii
Saturday September 15 was California Coastal Cleanup Day, with volunteers all over the state cleaning up beaches, creeks, parks, and roads. https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/15/spick-and-span-tens-of-thousands-volunteer-to-clean-california-on-annual-coastal-cleanup-day/
In Santa Clara County, there were 46 sites: https://www.valleywater.org/news-events/news-releases/volunteer-coastal-cleanup-day-sept-15
One of those sites was Coyote Meadows, a proposed San Jose city park along Coyote Creek north of Story Road and south of I-280. Here's the description of the event: "Coastal Cleanup Day is a terrific way to show your support for your California waterways, not just the Coast. Spend a few hours at Coyote Creek and help beautify our creek through a community cleanup. All ages welcome. Be sure to wear long pants, sleeves, and closed-toed shoes since you will be near poison oak and around loose or muddy soil. All are welcome to participate (those under 13 must be accompanied by an adult). Under 18 must have a signed waiver (available upon completed registration). Community service hours available. Let's work together for a vibrant Coyote Creek! This event is co-hosted by Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful and The Trash Punx. Co-sponsors are Center for Community Learning and Leadership, and CommUniverCity."
Coyote Meadows was once the site of the notorious homeless campground, known as "The Jungle." It was closed in 2014: https://www.mercurynews.com/2015/07/09/san-joses-jungle-former-homeless-encampment-returns-to-nature/
However, some homeless camps have returned, and there is a huge amount of litter in the area. A big crew of about 150 volunteers came out to clean up the site. It included San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. They picked up 6 tons of trash.
There was a similar event at the same location on Earth Day, April 14, 2018: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1777253622298152&type=1&l=b98693126b
