Little Uvas Creek Bat Hike, 9/1/18 by Ronald Horii
This hike was on 9/1/18:
In Search of Bats
Learn all about how these amazing creatures help the environment and out community’s health through the beneficial work they do. Join bat enthusiast and local expert, Joan for a gently paced walk through the Little Uvas Creek Property in search of bats. The program will start in daylight and go into the evening. Please bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes and dress for cooler temperatures after dark. This is a dry park so please bring water to drink.
Joan led the program, with help from docents Vicki, Paul, Kirsty, Elizabeth, and me. OSA staffers Teri and David were also there for support. Joan gave a talk and demo at the old ranch house ruins by the entrance. Then we hiked out to the ponds, where Teri and David had setup a projector and screen for Joan's slideshow presentation on bats. As it got dark, the bats came out. They were flying all around the trees, eating insects. They even flew overhead.
Joan, Paul, and I went on a preview hike here on 7/19/18. We saw some bats. I managed to get pictures of a few of them: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1895000347190145&type=1&l=506c52ce16
This time, we saw a lot more bats, but I didn't get many good pictures of them.
