Little Uvas Creek Bat Survey Hike, 7/19/18 by Ronald Horii
On 7/19/18, I went with fellow Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority docents Joan, Paul, and Joy to Little Uvas Creek Open Space Preserve. Our purpose was to see if this would be a good place for future bat-viewing events. The preserve is not open to the public yet, but we can have docent or staff-led events here. There have been nighttime stargazing events. It has ponds, which should attract bats, who feed on insects and drink water from the ponds. We hiked to the ponds and waited for dusk. We had a bat detector with us. We started hearing (with the bat detector) and seeing bats flying around nearby trees by the ponds. I managed to get some pictures of a few of them. We saw enough bats that we may try to schedule bat-viewing events here.
