Ulistac Natural Area, Santa Clara, 7/8/18 by Ronald Horii
On 7/8/18, I went for a bike ride on the Guadalupe River Trail. As I often do when biking this part of the trail, I stopped at Ulistac Natural Area in Santa Clara. It is one of my favorite places along the trail. It is a 40-acre shady natural oasis along the often shadeless and artificially channelized river. It is surrounded by condos, industrial parks, and it's in the shadow of the Great America Theme Park and the 49'ers Levi's Stadium. It is the only natural open space preserve in the city of Santa Clara. It is considered a sacred site by Native Americans. Over the years, it's been transformed from an abandoned golf course into a haven for native plants, birds, and butterflies. It took the effort of thousands of man-hours of volunteer effort by the Ulistac Natural Area Restoration and Education Project (UNAREP) to make it this way. They have continuing efforts to maintain and enhance the area. Here are pictures of Ulistac. (I'll add more captions later.)
