Fisher Flats & Fisher Bend BioBlitz, 6/20/18 by Ronald Horii
On 6/20/18, there was a BioBlitz at two properties in the Coyote Valley, recently purchased by the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and managed by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (OSA). A BioBlitz is a citizen science event where volunteers look for plants, animals, and insects in an area, photograph them, and upload the pictures to the iNaturalist app. The app identifies the organism, collects the information, and puts it on their website: www.inaturalist.org.

The BioBlitz was led by entomologist and ecologist Merav Vonshak. Here's her profile on iNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/people/merav
The walk was led by members of POST and by staff and volunteers from the OSA. We met at Coyote Valley Open Space preserve and carpooled to the two sites. One of them was Fisher Flats. It covers 30 acres near Fisher Creek and Tulare Hill and was purchased by POST in 2017: https://openspacetrust.org/post-news/coyote-valley/
It is former farmland, where there were once plans to build a 517,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center: https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2015/12/30/developer-proposes-distribution-center-for-san.html
The other property is called Fisher Bend. It covers 63 acres along Santa Teresa Blvd. and Richmond Avenue. It was purchased by POST from the Ramke family in 2017. The family had farmed the land for over 60 years. Fisher Creek, which has headwaters in Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve, flows through the property on its way to Coyote Creek. The creek makes a bend in the property, hence the name. https://openspacetrust.org/post-news/coyotevalley-ramke/
