Dos Pueblos High School Engineering Academy at the Maker Faire by Ronald Horii
At the Maker Faire Bay Area in San Mateo on 5/19/18, I saw lots of exhibits of projects by schools. Most were small. There was one that was huge. It took up a whole big tent. It was by the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy (DPEA). Why did that ring a bell? I used to live in Santa Barbara/Goleta and went to UCSB. My younger sisters went to Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta and even worked there. This was the same Dos Pueblos High School. Wow! There was nothing like this at DPHS when my sisters went there a few decades ago. (I won't say how many.) At the Maker Faire, I first thought the students were there to teach visitors about science, using exhibits borrowed from a museum. It turns out those exhibits were their projects. They were museum-quality. They looked very professional, well-built, and polished, like something you would see at a science museum. They may be bound for Santa Barbara's new science museum, the MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Science and Innovation. It's like San Francisco's Exploratorium. The academy is a 4-year interdisciplinary program. During their senior year, the students team up and develop interactive exhibits like those shown at the Maker Faire. The students get a practical education. This should give them a big head start going into college and industry.
I found I had another connection to the academy. They work out of the Elings Center for Engineering Education. Dr. Virgil Elings, former head of Digital Instruments Corporation, donated $1M to fund the construction of the center. He was a UCSB physics professor and my graduate advisor. A few years after I graduated, he left UCSB and founded Digital Instruments, which was a pioneer in scanning electron microscopes. My company, IBM, used his company's products. He sold the company to VEECO and became a multi-millionaire and philanthropist.
