Stile Ranch Trail Late Spring Flowers & Views, 5/17/18 by Ronald Horii
On 5/17/18, I went for a short hike on the Stile Ranch Trail to its high point. It is one of the best wildflower trails in all of Santa Clara County. Its secret is the serpentine rock that underlies it. Serpentine promotes the growth of native wildflowers that are adapted to its unique chemistry and discourages competing non-native plants. Some plants only grow in serpentine soil. A few rare plants only grow in serpentine soil in this part of the Santa Clara Valley. I wanted to see what late spring wildflowers were blooming. For comparison, these were the wildflowers in the early spring, 3/19/18: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1748525011837680.1073742344.100000405933924&type=1&l=863a574b6e
