Coyote Ridge Hike, 4/8/18 by Ronald Horii
On 4/8/18, I helped with a hike at Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve. There were two groups. One was a Sierra Club group. The other was a Meetup group. I accompanied the latter, led by Open Space Authority (OSA) docent Craige Edgerton. Craige has been leading hikes on Coyote Ridge for many years, even before the Open Space Authority starting leading hikes there. OSA educational aide David Mauk acted as the sweep. The hike started at the bottom of the preserve at Malech Road, near Bailey Road. There are no trails in Coyote Ridge. The hike followed old roads, some historic and now abandoned. We hiked up the steep trails to the ridgeline, had lunch there, then came back down, stopping at a wetland to look at some rare plants. Along the way, we saw lots of wildflowers, birds, and the star of the preserve, the Bay checkerspot butterfly.
