Gold Star Families Memorial Dedication, Oak Hill, 4/14/18 by Ronald Horii
On 4/14/18, there was a dedication ceremony at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose. It was for the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. Why did I attend this? You'll see at the end.
I received this invitation from Supervisor Dave Cortese:

Dear Ron,
“Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them.”
That quote by author George Eliot is a reminder that we must never forget those who served in our U.S. Military and the families who have loved and supported them. A new monument in San Jose is intended to do just that.
Please join me, Gold Star Families and veterans at an unveiling of the Gold Star Family Memorial Monument from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on monument Saturday, April 14, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose.
The new large granite monument is part of a nationwide tribute to Gold Star Families who have lost loved ones serving in the military. Locally, this monument is the result of a partnership between private sponsors, my office, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and Oak Hill Memorial Park. Oak Hill has provided a permanent site, and the County and sponsors provided the funding. There are 33 monuments installed across the U.S., and 44 others under way.
The movement was started by Hershel “Woody” Williams, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II and was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor in 1945. He wanted the monuments to honor the Gold Star Families for their sacrifice in losing a son, daughter, sister, brother or parent. After the war, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 33 years, continuing to serve veterans and their families. He still serves on the Governor’s Military Advisory Board in West Virginia.
