Tulare Hill Hike, 5/10/14 by Ronald Horii
I'm writing this in 2017. Over 3 years ago, on 5/10/14, there was a special tour of Tulare Hill, led by Craige Edgerton, executive director of the Sillicon Valley Land Trust, which owns and manages the 116-acre Tulare Hill Ecological Preserve. The land was donated to the trust by the adjacent Metcalf Energy Center as mitigation for building the power plant. See http://www.siliconvalleylc.org/

Tulare Hill is in a special location. It's the cork in the bottleneck of the Coyote Narrows, between the Diablo Range and the Santa Teresa Hills. It separates urban Silicon Valley from the rural Coyote Valley. The hills are totally undeveloped, except for power towers. The land is owned by a number of agencies, including the Santa Clara County Parks.

Tulare Hill is home to several threatened and endangered species, such as the Bay Checkerspot butterfly. The Land Trust hopes to maintain and improve the habitat so these species can thrive. The hill is normally closed to the public, so it was a rare and special opportunity to get a guided tour of it. This was part of the Discover Coyote Valley event: http://www.discovercoyotevalley.org/discover-coyote-valleys-may-10th-kick-off-events/
