Grebe Feeding at Hellyer, 9/19/17 by Ronald Horii
I was at Cottonwood Lake in Hellyer County Park. I was watching the birds. I saw ducks and pie-billed grebes in the lake. I zoomed in on some grebes. Then I saw one feeding and splashing in the middle of the lake, so I zoomed in as much as I could. It looked like it was eating a crayfish. I took these pictures and severely cropped them so you could see the bird feeding.

This also means Cottonwood Lake has crayfish. That's good because it was completely dry during the last drought. They may have washed in from Coyote Creek when it flooded in February. Bass also eat crayfish, so if any got washed in from the creek, they'll have food and can grow. All the fish in the lake died when it dried up.

Crayfish can survive drought conditions by burrowing into the mud. Often several feet down there is enough moisture to sustain them until the rain returns.
