Mt. Umunhum Trail Hike 9/17/17 by Ronald Horii
9/17/17 was the public grand opening for Mt. Umunhum in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. It was also the first public hike on the new Mt.Umunhum Trail. The trail runs for 3.3 miles from the summit of Mt. Umunhum to Barlow Road, then continues 0.3 miles to the Bald Mountain parking lot. It was built to modern trail standards, so even though it has a gain of 1150, it only has a 10% grade, so it climbs the hillside gradually. In doing so, it switches back multiple times. Each time, it provides varying glimpses of the summit of Mt. Umunhum.
I went on the guided hike as part of the grand opening tour. I was with a small group of 14 with 2 guides. We had been dropped off at the summit by a bus. We toured the summit, then hiked down the trail to the Bald Mountain Parking lot, where the bus picked us up and took us back to the Hacienda Entrance of Almaden Quicksilver County Park, where we were parked. Here are pictures of the tour of the Mt. Umunhum summit: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1557223030967880.1073742255.100000405933924&type=1&l=efef73ef3d
