Mt. Umunhum Public Grand Opening 9/17/17 by Ronald Horii
Happening on Sunday, September 17, 2017 was the long-awaited opening of Mt. Umunhum by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, 31 years after they bought the property from the Air Force. On Saturday September 16, 2017, they held an opening ceremony there for VIPs. On Sunday, it was open to the public, but only for those who were lucky enough to get a free ticket. They had around 900 tickets available only, and they were gone in 9 minutes. I tried ordering tickets just a few minutes after they were available, but I was too late. Fortunately, my friends, Greg and Roxanne Koopman were able to get tickets and had a cancellation, so there were able to give me one. I was dropped off at the top of the mountain by shuttle bus. I took a tour of facility on top, then hiked down the new Mt. Umunhum Trail to the Bald Mountain parking lot to catch a bus back. Below are pictures from that tour. Pictures from the hike are in this album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1557780844245432.1073742256.100000405933924&type=1&l=f2048b0f71

I was able to visit Mt. Umunhum in 2011, before all the buildings were torn down. It's quite a contrast from now: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.950688018288054.1073741926.100000405933924&type=1&l=0ded9036c6

The Tower is "spared for now, but not yet preserved". There's more work to do to save it for future generations. Stay tuned!

I went up there today. Still crowded, but wonderful to share it with folks who can interpret the natural history and the history.
