Japanese Friendship Gardens Re-Opened 9/14/17 by Ronald Horii
The Japanese Friendship Gardens in Kelley Park was inundated by flood waters from Coyote Creek in February 2017. The neighborhoods to the north and south were also flooded, and many people lost their cars and their possessions. In the garden, the water flooded the lower lake and came halfway up the teahouse walls. Fortunately, the large koi were moved up to the upper lake. Unfortunately, smaller fish escaped into Coyote Creek. The flood waters destroyed the pumping system for the lakes. There's a temporary pumping system, but only for the upper lakes. The garden was closed for months while it was being repaired. It still needs more work, but it was re-opened in early September. Here's what it looked like when I visited it on 9/14/17. Note that the pictures are not in chronological order.
