Preserving the History and Enhancing the Future of Matsuda Farm от King Conservation District
In the fall of 2015 the Vashon Land Trust celebrated the purchase of Matsuda Farm, preserving the 12 acres of prime agricultural land. Farmed by the Matsuda family for 55 years, the land is an important link to the history of Japanese farming in our region.

King Conservation District is making major contributions to enhancing the future of the land. In 2016 the KCD Regional Food System Program awarded a $50,000 grant to the Vashon Land Trust to support redevelopment of Matsuda Farm, with the goal of establishing a farm-to-school program with the Vashon School District.

Last fall, the KCD Landowner Incentive Program provided funding to plant a 35-foot buffer around the farm pond. More than 2,000 native trees and shrubs are being planted to protect the aquatic area and ensure an ample supply of irrigation water for the farm.

These photos review the history of Matsuda Farm and highlight the habitat enhancement project currently underway.

It is important to preserve this piece of history and ensure that the atrocity of interning Japanese Americans is never repeated again.
