Coyote Creek Trail, Metcalf Park to Bailey Ave., 8/27/17 by Ronald Horii
Late in the afternoon on 8/27/17, I went for a bike ride on the Coyote Creek Trail starting at Metcalf Park. It had been hot earlier, but when I started the bike ride at 5:30, it had cooled off enough that it was just warm. I was curious to see what Coyote Creek looked like in the middle of summer. This last winter's rains and flooding of Coyote Creek in February had wreaked havoc on the trail and surrounding areas. The heavy rains caused Anderson Reservoir spill, starting on 2/21/17, sending an uncontrolled torrent of water down the creek, causing destruction downstream. Even after the spilling stopped, the reservoir outlet pipe was wide open, maintaining high flows that kept low-lying areas flooded. The trail was flooded in several places and closed from Metcalf to Bailey. Parts of the trail were damaged. There was a huge gap in the trail where it hit Coyote Ranch Road. Part of the Coyote Ranch Road itself got washed away near Monterey Road. For awhile, there was a detour in the trail from Metcalf to Bailey, using Malech Road. After the trail flooding subsided, the trail was still closed from Metcalf to the south end of Coyote Ranch Road, requiring a detour along the north part of Coyote Ranch Road. The trail is open now, though there still may be more construction work to be done. Coyote Ranch Road at Monterey is still closed. Here are pictures from 8/27/17, with pictures from earlier in the year for comparison.
