Soaproot Hike at Rancho Canada del Oro, 6/11/17 by Ronald Horii
On 6/11/17, Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority docent Paul Billig and I led a hike at Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space, starting at 1:00 pm. The theme was "In Search of Soap Root." The soap root is an amazing native plant that had lots of uses by native people. It has an unusual characteristic in that its flowers bloom at night, opening in the late afternoon. With our early afternoon start, we were afraid that they might not be open during the hike. However, it was a cool day, in the high 60's, so there was a chance they might open early. We got lucky. We followed the Mayfair Ranch Trail to the Longwall Canyon Trail.
