La Raza Cleanup, Hellyer County Park, 5/20/17 by Ronald Horii
May 20, 2017 was National River Cleanup Day: http://www.cleanacreek.org/
There were creek cleanup sites all over Santa Clara County. One of them was at the closed El Parque de la Raza Disc Golf Course in Hellyer County Park, on Coyote Creek. In the winter, floodwaters from Coyote Creek overflowed there banks and caused extensive damage to La Raza. The cleanup event was a partnership between Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful (http://www.keepcoyotecreekbeautiful.org/, https://www.facebook.com/CoyoteCreekSJ/), the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club (http://svdgc.org/), A-Game Disc Golf (https://www.facebook.com/Agamediscgolf/), and the Santa Clara County Parks. Here's what the plan was (from A-Game):
Priorities for National River Cleanup Day are:
Cleanup trash around Coyote Creek.
The water level has dropped since the Anderson Dam valve was closed, so we should be able to get closer to the water. We'll start here, and work our way back from the creekbed.
Remove litter from along Coyote Rd:
Remember, if we don't get this, it will go into the creek.
Remove woody material from gates and other structures.
This will be placed alongside the curb so it can be chipped at a later date.
Shovel rocks and silt off parking lot. — at El Parque de la Raza de Paz. (near El Parque de la Raza de Paz)
