Russian Ridge Wildflowers, May 5, 2005 by Ronald Horii
This is a throwback look almost a dozen years ago to the most spectacular wildflower display I've ever seen on the Peninsula. It was at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve in 2005. This was in May, when wildflower displays in the South Bay were past their peak, and the hills there were turning brown. Since Russian Ridge is on the ridgeline of the Santa Cruz Mountains, it is cooled my ocean breezes and watered by fog. This pushes its wildflower season later in the year, and keeps its hills green. I've been to Russian Ridge many times before and after, but the wildflower displays have never been this good.
These pictures were taken with my good old 5 MP 3X zoom Minolta G500 compact camera: https://www.dpreview.com/articles/2648730102/dimageg500
