Post-Fire Hike at Rancho Canada del Oro, 10/29/16 by Ronald Horii
Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve has been closed since the Loma Fire started on Sept. 26, 2016. The fire burned 4,475 acres, out of which 43%, or 1930 acres, was on land managed by the Open Space Authority. The Casa Loma Road parking lot for Canada del Oro was used as a staging area for firefighting efforts, so was closed to the public, as was the preserve. On 10/29/16, the preserve re-opened. That day, docent Paul led the first guided hike, assisted by docents Judy, Kathy, and Ron (me), with OSA staff member Lauren. The hike was posted on the OSA's Meetup site. A large group showed up. The day started out cloudy. It got misty as we ascended the hill. We got a little bit of rain near the summit of the trail, then it started to clear up. It was sunny when we got back. We saw where the fire had come close to the trail, but did not cross over it. We could see burned areas in the distance, but clouds partially obscured the view. Here are pictures from the hike.
