Video Screen Grab Test, Martial Cottle Park, 10/24/16 by Ronald Horii
This is a test comparing video frame grab vs. still photo quality. I used my Olympus OMD E-M10, shooting video in 720P HD mode and still pictures in 16 MP fine JPEG mode (4608X3456). I also took 5.8 MP (3200X1800) still pictures while recording in video mode. I shot these pictures at Martial Cottle Park. I used VLC Media Player to grab video frames while playing the videos, which were in MOV format. I uploaded the pictures to Facebook unedited. Facebook automatically resizes them to a maximum width of 2048 pixels if they exceed that. In the usual Facebook album thumbnail mode, the pictures look the same. However, when viewed full-screen, the higher resolution pictures are noticeably sharper. The video frame grabs are not that bad, though, and are good enough for Facebook. Note that the video shots have an aspect ratio of 16:9, while the still shots are 4:3. The camera is capable of shooting video in full HD and still pictures in RAW, so I'll try those modes in future tests. — at Martial Cottle Park. (near Martial Cottle Park)
