On 10/15/16, my wife and I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's annual open house: http://www.mbari.org/about/mbari-open-house/
MBARI is one of the premier marine research institutions in the world. It is known for the development and usage of cutting-edge underwater research equipment and methods. It is normally closed to the public, except for visiting researchers and public lectures. However, once a year, they put on a show for the public. They have lectures, displays of their tools and equipment, and educational activities for kids. Here are some pictures:
